SoCal Faces Another Day of Heat, Humidity and the Possibility of Summer Storms

Light showers were falling in some parts of Southern California early Thursday as the region prepared for another sweltering day of heat and humidity.

Thursday marks the fourth day of a heat wave that's expected to persist into the week. Temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.

In Santa Clarita, some residents were without power -- and air conditioning -- overnight during one of the warmest weeks of summer. About 230 customers were without power. Outages also were reported Wednesday in Glendale.

There's a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday morning in Los Angeles, the San Gabriel, San Fernando and Antelope valleys, Santa Catalina Island, the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area and both coastal and inland Orange County. There's also a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Rain was reported early Thursday in parts of the South Bay and inland areas.  Light showers fell in the San Fernando Valley later Thursday morning.

On Tuesday, lifeguards cleared beaches from Malibu to Santa Monica and south to Torrance because of an electrical storm. A lightning strike was reported in Marina Del Rey.

Long Beach reached 96 degrees on Tuesday, breaking the record for that date of 94 degrees, set in 1974.

Over the next few days, air circulating clockwise will pick up moisture from Mexico, including Baja California. There's no expectation of flash flooding, but there could be an elevated danger of fire amid the dryness at lower elevations if thunderstorms develop and generate lightning, including dry lightning.

Expect mostly cloudy skies Thursday and highs of 79 degrees in Avalon and at LAX; 83 on Mount Wilson; 89 in Downtown L.A.; 91 in Long Beach; 94 in San Gabriel and Burbank; 95 in Pasadena; 100 in Palmdale and Saugus; 101 in Woodland Hills; and 102 in Lancaster. Temperatures will be slightly lower Friday under a combination of sunny and partly cloudy skies.

Partly cloudy skies were forecast in Orange County, along with highs of 76 in San Clemente and Laguna Hills; 77 in Newport Beach and on Santiago Peak; 85 on Ortega Highway at 2,600 feet; 87 in Fremont Canyon; 88 in Mission Viejo; 89 in Fullerton, Irvine and Trabuco Canyon; and 91 in Yorba Linda and Anaheim. Friday's highs under sunny skies will be slightly lower.
