THE SEA— The CA Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment just issued new safety guidelines for eating locally caught fish off the Santa Monica Bay. Surprising findings suggest that "women of child-bearing age and children should reduce or avoid eating most fish from central Santa Monica Bay to Palos Verdes to all of San Pedro Bay," as a result of DDT (the pesticide used to control insects), PCB (a man-made chemical used in industrial processes) and mercury contamination levels. This includes locally caught halibut, kelp bass, Pacific chub mackerel and many others. As for men and women over 45, the warnings are more lenient. [Spouting Off]

OUT AND ABOUT— Have a favorite farmers market? The American Farmland Trust is promoting local foods and farms through a contest to find the country's top three leading farmers markets. Vote for your choice LA market until August 8, and the winning three large, medium, and small markets will be awarded a shipment of reusable tote bags to distribute to shoppers. [EaterWire]
