There are many important authors who have profoundly impacted fantasy and science fiction story telling and the novel in general. And then there is Mr. Ray Bradbury, who, at 88, is not just one of the greatest living writers, but one of the greatest writers of all time. On Halloween day, the visionary behind "Fahrenheit 451" is signing books at Vroman's in Pasadena, an event we are encouraging every friend who has every loved a Bradbury book to attend.
Halloween and Ray Bradbury are, of course, perfectly matched. Not only did he dream up the beloved "Halloween Tree" -- still one of the eeriest tales of the season -- but he energized the horror and fantasy genres in a way few have by truly infusing them with smarts and a social conscience. "Fahrenheit 451" is his most famous work, but the short story "The Veldt" is the one that still keeps us up at night. And "All Summer in a Day" showed a bittersweet existence for a group of children of Venus. Magic.
The Halloween plans you committed to will still be loud and lively, even if you take an hour out of your day to run by this event. Seriously. We were lucky enough to swing by a Ray Bradbury signing a few years back, and the chance to thank such a wonderful author for his contribution to the world of imagination was meaningful indeed.
