South Bay Event Supports the Deaf Community

Calling all volleyball teams and fans to support the nonprofit Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) by participating in a volleyball tournament north of the Hermosa Beach Pier on October 19, 2019.  The event aims to increase awareness about hearing loss and eradicate the stigma that young deaf children face every day. All proceeds will benefit HLAA.

The co-ed 4v4 tournament requires players to wear earplugs during their game. For added fun, professional volleyball players will be auctioned off prior to the tournament to assist teams on the court.

Kelsey Brandin, founder of Volley4Sound, was raised in the South Bay and attended local Manhattan Beach schools where she met hearing specialist, Margie Hindenlang, at age 4. Brandin, now 25, was inspired by her and credits her academic success at Cal State Long Beach and current position at NBCUniversal to Hindenlang.

“She taught me that being unique is better than being perfect,” said Brandin, adding that Hindenlang delayed her retirement until Brandin graduated from Mira Costa High School.

Shortly after she retired, Hindenlang was diagnosed with lung cancer. Brandin began planning a volleyball tournament to put on a charity event for her.

“After speaking with Margie, I decided to support a cause that meant a lot to her, which was hearing loss,” Brandin said. “Margie passed away earlier this year, but our tournament will still continue to honor her.”
