22-Year-Old Man Arrested After Fatal 4-Car Chain Reaction Crash on 5 Freeway

The driver of the Honda, Armen Basmadzhyan of Glendale, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A 22-year-old Glendale motorist has been arrested in connection with a four-vehicle crash on the Golden State (5) Freeway that killed a 29-year-old driver and injured two other people, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.

The 22-year-old man, whose name was not immediately available, driving a 2015 Mercedes-Benz, was going northbound, north of the Colorado Street exit, when he rear-ended a 2009 Honda at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday. The force of that impact pushed the Honda into the rear of a 2006 Toyota and the raised concrete wall, the CHP reported.

The Toyota then rear-ended a 2017 Nissan, resulting in minor injuries to the driver and right front passenger in that vehicle.

The driver of the Honda, Armen Basmadzhyan of Glendale, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Investigators were still trying to determine if alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in the crash, the CHP said. It was not immediately clear what led the CHP to arrest the 22-year-old driver, who suffered moderate injuries from the crash.

Anyone who saw the crash was asked to call the CHP at (626) 296-8100. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
