Deputies shot and killed a man in a Rancho Santa Margarita neighborhood Tuesday, sheriff’s officials said.

The shooting took place about 2:45 p.m. on Paseo Viento after deputies responded to an “attempt suicide” call, Lt. Jeff Hallock of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said.

Before gunfire erupted, deputies had entered the residence and confronted the man, who was suffering from multiple self-inflicted stab wounds, according to a sheriff's news release.

The man, identified as 40-year-old Rancho Santa Margarita resident Alec Ouzounian, was taken to the hospital. Hallock confirmed about 2 hours later that the man had died.
