Shooting Victim Found Dead in Reseda Driveway

The brother of a man gunned down in Reseda said the victim had big dreams that were cut short. Gordon Tokumatsu reports for the NBC4 News on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016.

A 31-year-old with big dreams, making in-roads into the hip-hop and R&B industry, was gunned down in front of his Reseda home early Tuesday morning.

"He just wanted to live life to the fullest," Troy McGee, the victim's brother, said.

The LAPD West Valley Division initially responded to a "man down" call at 12:45 a.m. near Etiwanda Avenue and Valerio Street, where 31-year-old Derrick McGee was discovered dead on the driveway of a duplex.

The body was removed by the coroner's office around 8 a.m.

His neighbor, Luis Barreto, said McGee was never a trouble-maker.

"I looked over at the cop car and I seen a body, like, laying there. And I was, like, 'Oh, man,'" Barreto said.

Residents living nearby were shocked and frightened after hearing about the shooting, which they say is rare for their neighborhood.

One neighbor, Francisco Vilogron said he heard the gunshots, but initially dismissed the noise thinking it may have been fireworks.

"I'm pretty scared now," Vilogron said. "I'm sure my wife is going to be pretty scared when I tell her about this whole thing."

Neighbors said two different families rent two houses that sit on the property where he was found. According to those neighbors, the front house is typically quiet, but they have spotted strange activity at the home in the back including seeing various luxury cars coming to and leaving the house.

Police said they did not know why McGee was shot, or who may have shot him. No witnesses had come forward Tuesday as of 12 p.m.
