Healthy Foods That May Harm Your Teeth

Some healthy foods have a downside by causing chips in teeth and removing veneers or fillings when their hard texture is bitten. Dr. Bruce Hensel reports for NBC4 News at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014.

While a healthy diet is good for the body, some health foods may be harming teeth during consumption.

Some raw and uncooked foods can cause mouth damage by chipping teeth or sticking between the teeth, which may lead to serious gum problems.

Some of the foods putting teeth at risk:

  • Apples
  • Carrots
  • Nuts
  • Hard beans
  • Cauliflower
  • Broccoli
  • Kale
  • Granola

Dr. Bruce's advice on how to get the benefits without the risks:

  • Chew food thoroughly and take your time.
  • Don't bite into hard apples and raw fruits. Cut them into slices instead.
  • When eating kale and other plant foods and grains, use your back teeth to chew.
  • Floss immediately after eating all foods. Trapped food pieces can lead to infection and decay.
