Man Wounded in Police Shooting After Running From Police, Carjacking SUV

A suspect was shot and wounded by police near County-USC Medical Center and the university’s Health Sciences Campus in Boyle Heights. Beverly White reports for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016.

A suspect who was shot and wounded by police after he escaped from custody during a hospital visit and who then carjacked an SUV remained hospitalized Thursday, police said.

The man, identified as 36-year-old Freddy Bailon, was initially arrested by police Tuesday on suspicion of holding a knife to a female's throat.

A man of that name and age was arrested Tuesday by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollenbeck Station, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's online inmate records.

No officers were injured in the shooting, which occurred about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Zonal Avenue and Cummings Street, police said.

After being shot, Bailon was again taken to a hospital, where he was in stable condition, LAPD Sgt. Meghan Aguilar told reporters at the scene. The female who was driving the SUV was not injured, she said.

The suspect was originally arrested after Hollenbeck Station officers conducting a follow-up investigation to an unspecified incident about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 5200 block of Ithaca Avenue in El Sereno were directed to an apartment complex, where they encountered the suspect inside an apartment doorway holding a knife to a female's throat, Aguilar said.

The female escaped and the suspect surrendered after a standoff, Aguilar said.

He was taken Wednesday to County-USC by a detective and two patrol officers for a medical examination, but broke free and fled. He removed a female from the SUV she was driving and commandeered the vehicle, but was shot by a pursuing officer, Aguilar said.

A crashed SUV bearing a USC banner could be seen outside a parking structure.

An alert issued by USC in the shooting's immediate aftermath advised students and others to avoid the area, but an LAPD officer said there was no ongoing threat to the campus.
