Day 7 of the 2016 Rio Olympics began with a soccer stunner.
The powerhouse U.S. women's soccer team, after taking care of business in the group stage, fell in a shoot-out against Sweden in the team's quarterfinal matchup.
Also Friday, Michael Phelps has another golden opportunity in the 100m butterfly and a Southern California swimmer is eyeing the podium in the 50m freestyle. On the track, Big Bear's Brend Martinez will be in action.

1. U.S. Knocked Out in Soccer
The United States cruised to the top of its group, and the three-time defending gold medalists and World Cup champions looked ready to claim another gold.

Then, Sweden delivered one of the 2016 Olympics' most surprising upsets.
Sweden scored early in the second half before Diamond Bar's Alex Morgan added the equalizer in the 78th minute. Sweden won the shoot-out, 4-3, after both teams saw scoring opportunities slip away in extra time.
Sweden is ranked sixth in the world, but struggled to a third-place finish in its group to narrowly advance into the quarterfinal.

2. Butterfly Showdown
Michael Phelps is looking to add to his gold collection. This time, it's in his premier event, the 100m butterfly against a worthy foe. He'll be competing against South Africa's Chad le Clos, who won the 200m butterfly title at the 2012 London Olympics, beating Phelps in the process.
Phelps came to Rio as the world's most decorated Olympian, then added four more golds.

3. Splash and Dash
It’s been a long road to Rio for Valencia's Anthony Ervin. At 35, this Olympics marks his third. He retired from competition in 2003, but returned after nearly a decade and finished fifth in the 50m freestyle in London. He tied for gold with American Gary Hall Jr. at the 2000 Olympics.
He already has a medal in the 4-by-100m relay, and Ervin will try to add another in the 50m freestyle final.

4. Ready, Set, Go for Track and Field
Track and field events begin Friday in Rio, and Southern California's Brenda Martinez will compete in the first round of the 1,500-meter run. Martinez lives in Big Bear, where she started a track club.
Other events in the evening session: women’s heptathlon, hammer throw qualifying, shot put final and 100m Round 1, and men’s 400m Round 1 and long jump qualifying.

Ledecky Makes a Splash: Katie Ledecky will try to defend her title in the 800m free. She set the record on her way to win the gold in London as a 15-year-old. On Thursday, she set an Olympic record of eight minutes, 12.86 seconds to lead the 800m freestyle field after the preliminary heats.

Women's Soccer Quarterfinals: Brazil will have a heavy home field advantage when it plays Friday night at Belo Horizonte in the quarterfinals against Australia. The dominant Brazilians ran circles around their group stage competition, finishing with plus-seven goal differential.
