One of the premiere events of the Summer Olympics is in the spotlight Tuesday when some of the world's best athletes compete for medals in the women's team gymnastics competition.
The biggest stars in swimming are back in the pool, as are several Southern Californians who are members of the women's water polo team. Team USA's women's soccer team also plays Tuesday, wrapping up its group stage in a position to advance to the knockout rounds.
Here are our 4 to Watch for Tuesday Aug. 9:
1. Women's Gymnastics Team Final
It's not easy being the favorites. Now Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, of Tarzana, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian, an incoming freshman at UCLA, look to defend Team USA's 2012 title.

The team is headlined by Biles, who could win as many as five gold medals in Rio. The 4-foot-9-inch gymnast has been the giant of her sport since her debut in 2013 and is the first female gymnast since 1974 to win four consecutive all-around titles at the U.S. national championships.

2. SoCal Pool Party
A roster laden with Southern California athletes has the United States women’s water polo team in position to challenge for a second straight gold medal. The crew includes Bruins KK Clark, Rachel Fattal, of Seal Beach, Sami Hill, of Santa Barbara, Courtney Mathewson, of Orange, Maddie Musselman, of Newport Beach. They’ll set the crosstown rivalry aside and join USC’s Kami Craig, of Santa Barbara, and Kaleigh Gilchrist, of Newport Beach to take on Spain in their first preliminary match.

3. More Medals in Sight for Phelps
A rejuvenated Michael Phelps competes in the 200m butterfly final, an event where he took silver in 2012. If he wins gold, the most decorated athlete in Olympic history will add to a total that includes 19 gold medals, two silver and two bronze.
Phelps qualified for the finals with a second-place finish in the semifinals.

4. U.S. Women Close Out Group Stage
Diamond Bar's Alex Morgan, who scored a goal in the opener, and Team USA close out preliminary round matches against Colombia, looking to move on to the knockout phase. The Colombian squad has found some success on the international stage since the 2012 Olympics, but the U.S. remains heavy favorites in this contest. Carli Lloyd continues to frustrate the opposition with a goal in each of Team USA's first two games.

Ledecky’s Dominance: Katie Ledecky attempts to continue her reign in the 200m freestyle with an Olympic win while defending Olympic 100m freestyle champion Nathan Adrian begins his quest to defend his title. One of the breakout moments of the London games was when Adrian beat Australia’s James Magnussen by one one-hundredth of a second (0.01) to bring home gold.

Women's Soccer: Aline Reis, in her fourth year as a goalkeepers coach at UCLA, earned her first roster spot for Brazil in the Rio Olympics. The hosts take on South Africa in a group stage match and are well positioned to advance into the knockout stage in front of the home crowd.
