Residents captured footage of a bruin in Arcadia, where neighbors were unsettled by the latest bear spotting as the animals descend from the hills in search of food and water. Beverly White reports for the NBC4 News at 11pm on Friday, May 17, 2013
Residents in Arcadia reported seeing a bear roaming through their neighborhood Friday evening, police said.
“He saw us. He didn’t run. He just looked at us. He turned around, like nothing was happening; very nonchalant,” resident Mark Liu said.
After digging through the Lius’ trash can, the bruin ran back into the hills.
Wildlife officials confirmed the bear spotted in the 2200 block of Canyon Road returned to the hills before they could capture it.
As the weather becomes warmer and food and water become harder to find in the wilderness, experts say bears are more likely to descend from the forest and into neighborhoods.
Fridays are trash collection day in the Arcadia community where the bear was spotted.
Earlier this week, a 250-pound female black bear was tranquilized in La Cañada Flintridge along Foothill Boulevard.

In Arcadia, resident Peter Borawksi said he’s noticed bears visitng the neighborhood during daylight hours more often than they used to. He added that as long as humans keep a safe distance, humans and bears can co-exist.
Residents throughout the Southland, especially those living near foothills, are urged to secure their trash and pick up loose fruit from their yard.
