Southland Law Enforcement Beef Up Patrols in Wake of Boston Marathon Attack

Dodger Stadium is among the areas with increased security, as the team faces San Diego and celebrates Dodger legend Jackie Robinson

In an effort to prevent a tragedy similar to the twin explosions at the Boston Marathon, Southland law enforcement agencies increased security out of an abundance of caution, allocating more resources to mass transit and public venues than they usually would. Southern California law enforcement agencies on Monday expanded security as a precaution against the potential for an attack similar to the explosions at the Boston Marathon.

Los Angeles Police Department dispatched increased patrols to Dodger Stadium, where the scoreboard went dark (pictured below) Monday night as a moment of silence was observed for the victims in Boston.

Fans gathered at the stadium Monday to celebrate the 66th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's debut into Major League Baseball. The Dodgers faced off against the San Diego Padres.

While the tragedy in Boston was on their minds, Dodger fans said they have faith in local law enforcement and want to stay focused on positivity, especially on a night honoring baseball legend Robinson.

“I had a few texts today saying, ‘don’t go,’” Angie Varela said. But I’m a huge Dodgers fan, anyone who knows me, and seeing the high presence of police, of the LAPD out here, I feel safe. I really do.”

Beefed up security is expected to continue into Tuesday, officials said.

"Right now there is no information that we believe there is a connection to the Los Angeles area, but anytime an incident like this occurs, it puts us on heightened awareness and we put that down to our officers to make sure that they are aware of their surroundings, especially at large venues,” LAPD Sgt. Rudy Lopez said.

The added Sheriff's Department patrols focused on public transit, including Union Station; places where people congregate and government buildings, said department spokesman Steve Whitmore. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced increased security measures and additional inspections of the bus and rail system.

Orange County authorities took similar precautions by beefing up police presence in public gathering places and sporting venues.

Tim Moy, with OC Sheriff's Department.

Organizers for the Orange County Marathon on May 5 are consulting with regional law enforcement to ensure the safety of participants and audience members, said Gary Kurtscher, race director for the event. He said organizers are waiting to learn more about the explosions in Boston before making any major decisions.

Officials hosting the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach this weekend said they are also adding security as a precaution.
