Teen Hides in Closet, Inches From Burglars

Olympian “Blade Runner” Oscar Pistorius held his head in his hands and wept openly in a Pretoria, South Africa, courtroom Friday as prosecutors said they would pursue a charge of premeditated murder against the Paralympic superstar. He now faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted of the Valentine’s Day killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model and budding reality TV star. Steenkamp was shot and killed at Pistorius’ upmarket South African home in the predawn hours of Thursday. “The alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms,” Pistorus said in a statement released by his management company and family after the court appearance. Pistorius did not enter a plea during his court appearance, where Chief Magistrate Desmond Nasir noted his tears by saying at one point, “take it easy.” The double-amputee athlete’s arrest and murder charge has left South Africa reeling after the model’s shooting death. The magistrate delayed Pistorius’ bail hearing until next Tuesday and Wednesday and ruled that the 26-year-old Pistorius would be held at a police station in Pretoria until then. Police have said they oppose the granting of bail.

Doian Oladipupo grabbed a phone and ran into her parent’s walk-in closet when she heard burglars enter her Chula Vista home.

The intruders came so close to discovering the 15-year-old that their voices could be heard during the 911 call.

“Robin, Robin, bring it over here. Bring the bucket over here,” one burglar said.

“I can hear them. Don’t talk,” the dispatcher told Oladipupo.

Unable to speak, Oladipupo tapped on the phone to answer the dispatcher’s yes or no questions.

“I was just so thankful,” she said of emerging from the ordeal unscathed.

The teen was home alone Tuesday afternoon when she said someone knocked on the door then opened a window. She ran upstairs and called 911, but soon after, one of the intruders entered the closet she was hiding inside.

Oladipupo kept calm, steadied her breath and went undetected by the intruders ransacking her home.

An 18-year-old and two 17-year-olds were arrested in connection with the break-in after Oladipupo identified her family’s belongings in the trio’s car, which was also stolen, police said.

Police believe the burglars are connected to other heists in the area.
