Ed Helms Shares His Music With Students at Providencia Elementary School in Burbank

Ed Helms was invited as part of the Education Through Music - Los Angeles program

“The Office” star Ed Helms performed for and hung out with hundreds of young musicians at Providencia Elementary School in Burbank on Tuesday, May 1. “They invited me to come here and it was a no-brainer,” Helms says. Cary Berglund reports for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. on May 1, 2012.

About 400 young musicians at Providencia Elementary School in Burbank were treated to a special guest Tuesday when a man best known for his comedic acting stopped by for a visit.

Ed Helms has starred in The Office, the Hangover films and The Lorax, but there’s more to Helms than acting.

He’s part of a band called "The Lonesome Trio" that he formed with his friends when he was in college. They appeared at the school Thursday as part of the Education Through Music - Los Angeles program.

"They invited me to come here and it was a no-brainer," Helms said. "Just to interact with the kids and see firsthand what's going on, it's really, really cool and really special."

They spent the day playing bluegrass for the kids and discussing music.

"It's been shown to sort of have these really incredible effects on the whole community," Helms said. "It gets parents invested when their kids are doing creative things."
