Commercial building fire sends cloud of smoke over Lynwood area

The fire about 10 miles south of downtown Los Angeles burned through the warehouse's roof.

Fire crews battled a commercial building Wednesday morning that sent thick smoke over Lynwood and made a nearby high school dismiss it’s student early. Jonathan Gonzalez reports for the NBC4 News on May 8, 2024.

A fire at a large commercial building Wednesday morning sent thick smoke over the Lynwood area.

The fire, which burned through the roof of the sprawling building, was reported at about 8 a.m. in the 5400 block of Cortland Street. Flames and smoke could be see rising from the burning building nearly two hours later.

There were no immediate reports of injuries. Students at nearby Firebaugh High School were dismissed early due to the fire and smoke.

A man who said his cousins own the warehouse said the business shipped recycled clothes an toys overseas.

The location about 10 miles south of downtown Los Angeles is near a school and residential area.
