A family of five, including three children under age 10, escaped a three-alarm fire in their Irvine home before firefighters charged inside to rescue their pet Labrador retriever from the flaming house Tuesday night, firefighters said.

The fire, first reported at 9 p.m. at 29 Sandstone (map), spread to a second home before it was knocked down just after 10 p.m., according to Capt. Steve Concialdi, spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority.

Upon arriving to the scene, firefighters immediately requested assistance to help knock it down.

The family, including a mother, father, and children ages 2, 8 and 10, escaped the house where the fire started, but the father suffered a minor first-degree burn to one of his arms, Concialdi said.

The family's black Labrador retriever was rescued from the house, resuscitated by firefighters and brought to an animal clinic in Tustin, he said.

The fire in the two-story home with a three-car garage prompted Concialdi to urge residents to make sure their fire alarms have working batteries to prevent such situations.

About 50 firefighters responded to the blaze and kept it from spreading to two additional homes, Concialdi said.

The family was displaced from their home and the Red Cross was called to provide them assistance, he said.

A car in the house's garage was completely destroyed, reported a news photographer at the scene.

Arson investigators were combing the scene for evidence as to what prompted the blaze.
