Bad news. Parents in California have to make more money annually than parents in just about any other state in the U.S. to live comfortably and send their kid to college in-state, according to a recent study by a personal finances website.
To identify how much parents need to make to pay for college tuition outright rather than opting for student loans, researchers at GOBankingRates used data from the College Board to estimate the average price of tuition and fees at public four-year institutions. They factored in the cost of living in each state by identifying the dollar amounts required to cover necessities like a mortgage, groceries, utilities and more.
The researchers compiled the data to show which five states parents must make the most money to live comfortably and pay for tuition and which five states parents can make the least money to do the same.
