Giant Sinkhole Still Causing Problems

The sinkhole in Playa del Rey formed in Dec. 2010

As a storm moved across Southern California on Friday, a stretch of road in Playa del Rey that was damaged by a storm in 2010 is still in need of repairs.

A giant sinkhole in Playa Del Rey is still in need of repairs nearly a year after it first formed.

A storm in December 2010 washed away part of Vista del Mar, about a half-mile north of Imperial Highway. According to the Department of Public Works, there is now slope erosion in five different locations along the road.

The department is waiting on money from Caltrans to fix the problem, lead engineer Vince Jones said. After the sinkhole is repaired, the work will have to undergo an environmental review.

Due to competition with other projects, the department considers this a normal waiting period, Jones said.

Until the repairs are made, barricades are in place to guide drivers around the sinkhole.
