To celebrate their 85th anniversary, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre is turning back time to screen classics that premiered at the iconic movie palace for a whopping 25 cents. That’s the 1927 price. Cary Berglunds reports from Hollywood for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. on April 13, 2012.
It's almost hard to imagine Hollywood without Grauman's Chinese Theatre, stoicly planted on the equally-iconic boulevard. From the minute it opened, it became the place to premiere a film.
So the theatre isn't taking its 85th birthday lightly: Grauman's decided to mark time by rolling it back.
They started selling tickets to the first of what they hope will be a year of Monday night classics, all for the 1927-price of a quarter.
So far they plan to show Shanghai Express on April 23, Hell's Angels on April 30, Breakfast at Tiffany's on May 21 and The King and I on May 28.
The films have been restored or remastered so that the experience will be as close to perfect as possible.
"It's an incredible presentation," said Alwyn Hight Kushner with Grauman's Chinese Theatre. "The films are fabulous, and the price is right."
If the 25-Cent Movie Mondays are successful, theater officials said they plan to continue screening classic films through the end of their 85th anniversary year.
