Suspect Sought in Shooting of Father, 1-Year-Old Baby in Watts

The incident happened shortly before 8 p.m. as the pair stood in front of a home in Watts

Police are searching for the man who shot a 24-year-old father and his 1-year-old baby in front of a home Monday night in Watts, police said.

Shortly before 8 p.m., someone rode by the pair on a bicycle and opened fire in the 10500 block of Hickory Street (map), said Officer Karen Rayner with LAPD.

The baby was shot in the stomach, the man in the shoulder.

The pair was transported to the hospital, where the baby was listed in critical condition; the father was listed in stable condition, Rayner said.

Police described the suspect as a 15- to 17-year-old boy who fled the scene on a bicycle.

"I'm so angry that this kind of thing could happen, because this is the scenario that we talk about constantly in community meetings and that is the innocent kids, in this case a baby, who get caught in the middle," said Capt. Phil Tingirides with LAPD.

It was not immediately clear whether the shooting was gang related, but police said that area of Watts has been beset by a large number of gang-related shootings, City News Service reported.
