High wind warning in effect for parts of SoCal. Here's when winds will peak

When will the strongest winds arrive? Belen De Leon has the forecast for Thursday March 14, 2024. 

A high wind warning is in effect Thursday for areas in the Inland Empire, Malibu Coast and Orange County.

The strongest winds will arrive during the late morning, then gradually diminish. Gusts of 40 mph were reported early Thursday in Ontario and 35 mph in Santa Ana.

"This is only going to get stronger as we head into late morning and early afternoon," said NBCLA forecaster Belen De Leon. "That's when we're expecting the winds to peak."

A large tree fell onto power lines and damaged about 10 cars during a windy overnight in Lake Balboa. The tree fell in the 16000 block of West Victory Boulevard.

Winds also toppled a tree in San Fernando on Lucas Street. The tree was blocking traffic between Orange Grove Avenue and Huntington Street. Another tree fell in the 1700 block of Locust Street in Pasadena. Streets were blocked by the fallen tree near Allen Avenue.

Some of Thursday morning's strongest gusts included 71 mph at Magic Mountain Truck Trail east of Santa Clarita, 63 mph in Pacoima, 55 mph in the Malibu area, 40 mph in Ontario and 39 mph in Irvine.

Winds are expected to weaken Friday, but breezy conditions continue into the weekend.

Warmer temperatures are expected Sunday and Monday, reaching into the 70s and possibly 80s.

Orange County

The wind warning has been issued from midnight to 6 p.m. Thursday. Inland and Coastal Areas will see northeast winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 70 mph.

The strongest winds will occur before sunrise Thursday and into the morning, likely making travel difficult for high-profile vehicles.

Inland Empire

The wind warning is expected from midnight to 6 p.m. Thursday. San Bernardino and Riverside County Valleys will see northeast winds of 30 to 45 mph and gusts up to 80 mph.

Isolated gusts up to 90 mph are possible below the Cajon Pass.

Malibu Coast

The wind warning is slated to last from midnight to 4 p.m. Thursday.

Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, Calabasas and Agoura Hills, Southeastern Ventura County Valleys and Eastern San Gabriel Mountains will see northeast winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph

Isolated gusts to 75 mph are possible in the San Gabriel Mountains and the western Santa Monica Mountains.

Winds will be the strongest in the mountain areas and there is some uncertainty on which other locations will see warning level winds.
