Humpback Whales Feet Away From Paddle Boarders in Redondo Beach

Paddle boarders in Redondo Beach got the surprise of a lifetime when humpback whales swam feet under them in Redondo Beach Sunday.

Laryssa and Russell Densmore said they were 1/4 of a mile off shore near the Redondo Beach Pier around 8:30 a.m. when they spotted the whales from their boat.

Densmore said there were about five of the mammoth animals chasing bait fish.

Paddle boarders and kayakers ventured out to see the animals closer, Densmore said.

"The whales [seem] very interested to greet them and in addition even came up to the side of our boat," Densmore said.

Densmore also said the whales came within 3 feet of the kayakers and paddle boarders.
