Just days before Thanksgiving, a heartbroken Southern California family gathered Tuesday to remember a 21-year-old loved one gunned down after left his grandmother’s home in South Los Angeles.
Jarret Crump picked up his friend Monday evening about 5:30 after he visited his grandmother. Crump and his friend were on their way to dinner when, at a stop light, a car pulled up next to them and opened fire, according to the victim’s mother.
The shooter fled the scene.
Mother Dara Davis Oliver said she rushed to the hospital only to be told by doctors they had exhausted every way to save her son.
A maintenance worked, Crump worked alongside his mother for the Los Angeles Unified School District. He was the youngest of three sons and always had a smile on his face, his mother said.
“He was a very good son, very good,” she said. “I just don’t understand how someone could do this to my son because he didn’t do anything to anyone – never have.”
Davis Oliver issued an emotional plea Tuesday evening at Crump’s vigil, begging for justice.

“Please, if you have any remorse, if you have any feelings, please turn yourself in because my son didn’t deserve this. No one deserves this,” she said, addressing the shooter who killed her son.
Crump’s friend who was in the passenger seat when gunfire erupted was grazed by a bullet. Crump’s family said that passenger is recovering.
Police did not reveal many details Tuesday evening about the deadly shooting, saying only that they are continuing to investigate.
