The Los Angeles Board of Education voted Tuesday to implement an early start calendar for the 2012-13 school year.
All Los Angeles Unified School District students with a traditional, two-semester calendar will start Aug. 14, 2012, three weeks earlier than usual, said LAUSD spokeswoman Monica Carazo.
The last day of school will be June 4, 2013.
LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy recommended postponing the early start due to a onetime cost of between $2-4 million combined with the uncertainty of state and federal budgets.
"There will be a one-time cost but we will own and bear it ... we'll make it work," Deasy told the Los Angeles Daily News.
At Tuesday's meeting, Board members Tamar Galatzan, Nury Martinez and Board President Mónica García voted against postponement.
Board member Bennett Kayser and Board Vice President Dr. Richard Vladovic voted in favor of postponement.

Board member Steve Zimmer abstained. Board member Marguerite LaMotte was absent from Tuesday's meeting.
Currently, 20 LAUSD schools start the school year in August, according to the district.
"LAUSD must embrace instructionally sound calendars that maximize environments for learning," said García. "I am glad that we are making a commitment to every student in the District that they will be able to take advantage of an early start calendar."
