Live Updates: Protesters Take Their Messages to the Beach and SoCal's Streets

Several groups have organized events at the end of a week of marches and protests in Southern California.

Marches and demonstrations are planned in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Dana Point, Downey, Santa Monica and other locations Friday at the end of a week of protests. On Friday morning, a group of protesters marched on Venice Beach toward Santa Monica.

The protests, sparked by the in-custody death of George Floyd in Minnesota and long-simmering anger over instances of police brutality, began as early as 8 a.m. in downtown Los Angeles and will continue through 5 p.m. in Long Beach.

A Black Lives Matter march in Dana Point from the Dana Point Harbor to Salt Creek Beach Park is scheduled from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

An anti-police brutality protest at Harvey Milk Promenade Park at 185 E. Third St. in Long Beach is scheduled for 5 p.m. Organizers said attendees are required to wear face masks.

Update 2:04 p.m.: Large Crowd Gathers in Lakewood

Protesters holding signs are gathering in Lakewood City Hall. Participants began to disperse before 2:30 p.m.

Update 12:41 p.m.: Gov. Newsom Demands Crowd Control Standards

At a midday news conference, Gov. Gavin Newsom called for the development of standardized statewide rules for the use of crowd-control techniques such as tear gas or rubber bullets by law enforcement. He is also calling for a statewide end to training of law enforcement on carotid restraints, saying they have no place in police work.

Update 12:38 p.m.: Protest in Long Beach

Several hundred people gathered in the quad of Long Beach City College for a protest organized by students.

Update 11:15 a.m.: March on Venice Beach

A group of protesters appears to be marching from Venice Beach to Santa Monica.
