Day Care Teacher Killed During Recess Allegedly by Daughter's Boyfriend

Police say the suspect knew the victim's work routine and used the break as an opportunity to attack

The woman was killed in a park in Long Beach, right in front of her students. Kate Larsen reports for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on October 11th, 2013.

A Long Beach man allegedly stabbed his girlfriend’s mother – the grandmother of his children – at a park Friday while the victim’s day care students were at recess, police said.

Steven Brown, 50, is suspected of fatally stabbing Kelleye Taylor, 53, at Orizaba Park about 1:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Taylor was a teacher at a private day care near the park where she was stabbed, said Sgt. Aaron Eaton, with Long Beach Police Department.

Taylor was watching about a dozen day care students on the playground when she was stabbed. She died at a hospital.

"You have what appears to be an innocent victim sitting alone inside of a park with children," Eaton said. "To have somebody come up and commit a crime like this that is so personal -- stabbing in front of all kinds of witnesses -- it just is amazing."

Eaton said the suspect knew Taylor’s work routine and used the day care recess as an opportunity to attack her. Investigators have not yet determined a motive.

Brown – who is dating the victim’s daughter – ran from the park after the alleged attack, but eyewitnesses helped police track him down at a nearby shopping center, Eaton said.
