Shaun Lumachi, whose website and monthly newspaper were go-to resources for information about Long Beach, was killed when a pickup truck crossed onto the wrong side of a road in Florida.
Family and colleagues were devastated by Lumachi's death.
"How are we supposed to cover this?" colleague Greggory Moore wrote on the Long Beach Post's website. "But at the same time, how can we not?"
Lumachi co-founded the Long Beach Post in 2007. It started out just as a website, but it was growing so popular that Lumachi, who served as publisher, added a print edition earlier this year.
Lumachi died Saturday, after a driver fell asleep on the road and smashed into a car in which he was a passenger. He was in Florida attending a conference of the National Workforce Association. He was there representing Long Beach's Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Board.
Widely viewed as a rising star in Long Beach business, politics and media, Lumachi was 33. He is survived by his wife, Dezire, and other family members.
