A man was arrested for allegedly firing shots that damaged a restaurant in Canoga Park. Gordon Tokumatsu reports for the NBC4 News on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021.
A man was arrested after opening fire outside a Shake Shack Thursday in the west San Fernando Valley.
The shooter, armed with a handgun, walked up to a window from outside the restaurant and fired about six rounds, police said.
No injuries were immediately reported in the shooting at about noon near Topanga Canyon and Victory boulevards in the Canoga Park area. It was not immediately clear how many people were inside the restaurant at the time.
Stan Thomas, a former U.S. Marine officer, helped police catch the shooter. He'd just pulled into the parking lot, hoping to get a shake, when he heard a popping sound.

"I saw a guy pointing a gun, firing at the building," he said.
In split second, he saw the damaged windows and put two and two together.
He called 911 and started following the man until police could arrive.

"I didn’t see where the gun went," he said. "I just saw him walking down this alley."
Police swarmed the man and took him into custody.
