Man Barricaded in Norwalk, SWAT Team Called In

After a handy man reported an assault to police, a suspected armed man engaged in a SWAT standoff for hours. Kate Larsen reports for the NBC4 News at 11 on Monday, July 11, 2016.

A man who was reported to have pointed a gun at a handyman last week barricaded himself in a home in Norwalk on Monday, prompting a SWAT response.

The alleged crime occurred on Friday and the victim returned about 1:50 p.m. Monday to the home in the 1200 block of Crewe Street, according to Sgt. George Suarez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Norwalk Station.

The victim spotted the suspect inside a home that is supposed to be vacant and called authorities, Suarez said.

Deputies contained the area but the man did not respond to SWAT team commands to surrender, Suarez said.

Authorities blocked off the neighborhood for about six hours while deputies tried to talk the man out of the house.

Deputies busted through the door and discovered the man was not inside the residence.

Authorities believe the man may have escaped before they arrived.
