Following a record-breaking heat wave over the weekend, a popular Joshua Tree National Park hiking trail was closed Tuesday until further notice.
As temperatures hit triple digits Saturday and Sunday, officials decided Tuesday to close 49 Palms Oasis to hikers.

Hikers will still be allowed along a half-mile stretch on the trail before signs close off the rest of the trail. Park officials say if they learn of visitors violating the temporary closure, they will close down the entire area to the public.
Reopening will be dependent on levels of rainfall.
Rangers offered advice Tuesday to visitors who decide to visit the park despite the warning.
- Be aware of health and fitness levels while hiking
- Drink plenty of water
- Wear hiking and weather appropriate clothing, which includes sunscreen
- Hikers should hike early in the morning and finish early to avoid high temperatures
- Do not bring dogs on trails, as they are especially vulnerable to heat
