An officer-involved shooting left one person hospitalized in the Pico-Union area near downtown Los Angeles Saturday morning, police said.
Los Angeles Police Department officers answered a robbery call outside a Subway sandwich shop on Pico Boulevard and Albany Street (map) at 2:00 a.m., an officer at LAPD's Rampart Station said.
The gunman -- who police said never fired his own weapon -- was shot at the scene and then taken to a local hospital. His is serious but stable condition, investigators said.
Police recovered the man's gun at the scene, the Rampart officer said.
"The obeserved a suspect matching the description with a weapon in hand. It was pointed in their direction and an officer-involved-shooting occurred," said LAPD Sgt. Rudy Lopez. "The suspect fell to the ground. He was taken into custody without further incident."
Lopez said initial officer statements indicated the officers were in fear for their lives and fired on the man.
Multiple patrol cars were still at the taped-off scene as of 7 a.m.

Officers also questioned witnesses who were inside the Subway at the time of the incident. Investigators said they were look at surveillance video from the scene, including from a Los Angeles Unified School District office that's nearby.
No officers were hurt.
