A large power outage in Montebello shut off lights -- and air conditioning units -- at homes and schools throughout the city on one of the hottest days of the year, officials said Monday.
Workers have restored power to many of the more than 5,000 customers affected by the 11:30 a.m. blackout. As of about 1:15 p.m., 909 customers remained without power, said Michelle Aguirre, a spokeswoman for Southern California Edison. By 3 p.m., electricity had been restored to all of the affected customers.
It is believed the outage was caused by an equipment failure from usual wear and tear, not heat, according to utility officials.
Temperatures were expected to reach 95 degrees in Montebello on Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
