Snow Strands Hundreds of Drivers on Route 58 at Tehachapi: CHP

The cold winter storm brought plenty of snow, even at the lower elevations. Kim Baldonado reports from Gorman for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Feb. 19, 2013.

"Hundreds of vehicles" are stranded on state Route 58 at Tehachapi in Kern County, California Highway Patrol officers reported late Tuesday.

Snowplows and sanding trucks were rushed to the area where dozens of miles of the freeway were shutdown due to snow that caused driving conditions to quickly deteriorate.

As of 10:30 p.m., CHP officials were escorting drivers off the roadway.

Extra heavy traffic had been reported on Route 58 as drivers to and from Southern California tried to avoid the potential closure of Interstate 5 over the Grapevine, which ironically remained open at 10 p.m.
