Once a city of its own, San Pedro is inviting Southern Californians to celebrate its rich history and character this weekend as the municipality marks a milestone.
The port town Friday is preparing to celebrate its 125th anniversary, a big party to show off its historic downtown area and maritime charm.
It is "where you can go and have a legitimate fish and chips dinner," said Eric Eisenberg of the Historic Waterfront District of San Pedro. "And where you can have a meal at the waterfront and watch cargo ships go by."
The Business Improvement District is sponsoring this weekend's event, which runs Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.
"We are looking forward to it immensely," said Andrew Silber, who owns The Whale & Ale on Seventh Street in San Pedro.
"San Pedro is very proud and again, unique is the word, because it's so old. It's kind of where Los Angeles started."
