Driver in Pre-Dawn Box Truck Chase Arrested in a Flood Control Channel

The driver was taken into custody after a chase that began in downtown Los Angeles and headed north into the San Fernando Valley.

A chase involving a stolen box truck began in downtown Los Angeles and continued into Burbank before the driver ran into a flood control channel. Video broadcast Monday Oct. 26, 2020 on Today in LA.

A rare early morning pursuit that began with a report of a stolen box truck in downtown Los Angeles ended in the Burbank area with a river channel search for the driver.

Details about the vehicle theft in downtown Los Angeles were not immediately available. At one point, the driver entered the Los Angeles County Twin Towers Correctional Facility property before returning to downtown LA streets.

The driver went north on the 5 Freeway and abandoned the vehicle on Olive Avenue in Burbank, then climbed a fence and disappeared in the empty flood control channel. Officers fanned out in the concrete channel, which is part of the LA River system.

The driver was taken into custody in a channel tunnel at about 6:20 a.m.
