A man who drowned after being pulled out by a rip current at Hermosa Beach was identified. Toni Guinyard reports for Today in LA on June 3, 2013.

A 21-year-old Lancaster man who drowned while swimming at Hermosa Beach with friends was identified, coroner’s officials said on Monday.

Daniel Thorne was swimming on Sunday when large waves pulled him into deep water at the Hermosa Beach surf line, said Lt. Joe Bale, of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.

Thorne was with two friends in waist-deep water, said Hermosa Beach police Sgt. Robert Higgins.

Several large waves caught them and began to pull all three into deeper water.

“Whenever there’s tide changes … it can be very unpredictable,” Higgins said.

The victim's two friends attempted to help the victim, but were unsuccessful, Higgins said.

The victim was last seen going under a wave and out of sight.
