Texting 101: Emoticons, Abbreviations

Teachers from Cal State LA and Whittier College came to the Caremore Care Senior Center to up the tech game of some very game seniors, who don't want to be left behind.

Some have hit the send or the OK button before, but they decided to take a class for the nuance lessons. But for some, half the battle was knowing what to push.

"I got a response back. I didn't even know I hit the send button," said Toni Griffin.

Once everyone was able to send a message, the teachers went on to the next layer, showing them how to use symbols, abbreviations, and text speak.

"I learned about 'winkin' and 'blinkin' and things of that nature. Shortcuts," said Glenn Brazeal.

"I received a message with the abbreviation, and I don't understand nothing," said Gladys Gravinni.
