The moon’s closer-than-usual passage by the Earth drew eyes upward this weekend.
At 4:32 a.m. PT, the celestial body was at its closest point to the Earth this month, about 221,824 miles away. And Southern California was among the best places to view the lunar show.

The occurrence, referred to by astronomers as the "perigee full moon” or the “supermoon" by casual observers, will last for roughly 12 hours. During that time, the moon will appear about 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than the average full moon, Live Science reported.
