A water main break in a residential West Hollywood neighborhood busted open a portion of the street in front of an apartment building Thursday.

A section of 1201 Formosa St. at Lexington Avenue (map) buckled and water was cut to nearby residents for some eight hours, according to Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

Water was returned by 10 p.m. to some 60 customers affected by the incident, which was reported about 1:30 p.m. when thousands of gallons of water gushed down Formosa Street and onto Santa Monica Boulevard.

Formosa Street at Lexington Avenue is expected to remain closed through the Friday morning commute.

It appeared a sink hole may be forming in front of an apartment where the main broke, but authorities said the buckling roadway is instead a "void" because the opening reached its bottom and likely will not continue growing.

The cause of the water main break is undetermined and involves a 12-inch cast iron main, LADWP said in a tweet.

In the past few years, there have been at least two water main breaks in the same area. LADWP said the system is about 70 years old.
