An woman in her 80s was killed by a garbage truck Monday in East Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The woman was standing near the corner of Avenue 22 and Broadway (map) when she was struck.
It’s not clear if she was trying to cross the street or if she fell into the path of the truck, which was traveling westbound on Broadway.
“At this point it appears the trash truck was going through the intersection on a green light, so we’re not quite sure what caused the victim to step off the curb,” LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman said.
The deadly collision happened about 11:25 a.m.
A witness who was waiting for the bus at the time told police is appears the woman was walking with a cane. Police believe the victim may have been between 84 and 87 years old.
Investigators are hoping more witnesses will come forward to help them piece together what happened. They are inspecting the garbage truck for possible mechanical failure.
