Explosion, Fire Destroys Montebello Auto Repair Center, Power Lines

Fire destroyed a Montebello auto repair shop Wednesday morning, leaving around 160 customers without power, authorities said.

Fire destroyed a Montebello auto repair shop and left hundreds of customers without power.

Around 350 customers were without power Wednesday morning after an explosion and fire, which engulfed the two-story commercial building. Officials responded to to the blast just after 12:30 a.m. in the 300 block of Whittier Boulevard.

The cause of the fire was determined to be equipment problems, according to the Southern California Edison outage website. Video showed fire burning at least one utility pole. 

Firefighters from multiple agencies were able to contain the flames by 5:30 a.m. Nearby streets will remain closed du to the building's current condition.

No injuries were reported.
