A woman was killed and a man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Saturday in a crash in Costa Mesa.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led up to a fatal collision around 10:30 p.m. on Harbor Boulevard at the northbound 405 Freeway offramp.

Officers initially responded to reports of a hit and run collision in the area and fled from the scene, northbound on Harbor, according to the Costa Mesa Police Department.

As the truck fled at a high rate of speed, it ran a red light at the Northbound I-405 Freeway offramp and broadsided a Kia Optima, Sgt. David Makiyama said.

The female driver of the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene and the male passenger was transported to Western Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, Makiyama said.

Officials said that several beer cans were sprayed over the crash site and the driver of the Nissan pick-up truck, Brandon Anthony Alvarez, was placed under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, hit and run, and vehicular manslaughter.

The identity of the woman was being withheld pending next of kin.

The investigation is ongoing and witnesses are asked to contact Costa Mesa PD at (714) 754-5264.
