The man who pointed the fake gun as police was hospitalized with at least one gunshot wound

Police opened fire in Upland after confronting a man who pointed what appeared to be a gun at officers. Gene Kang reports for Today in LA on Thursday Dec. 13, 2018.

Officers shot and wounded a man wielding a handgun that turned out to be fake early Thursday in the San Bernardino County community of Upland.

Police responded before dawn Thursday to reports of a suspicious person near an elementary school in the city east of Los Angeles. Investigators said officers opened fire when the man pointed what appeared to be a handgun at them.

It turned out to be a replica gun.

The suspect, a man in his 20s or 30s, was struck at least once and hospitalized in critical condition. He was not identified.

No officers were hurt.

Cabrillo Elementary School will be open Thursday with an increased police presence near campus.
