In response to a Saturday pro-Proposition 8 rally, opponents plan to protest the day after at Pershing Square.
The pro-Prop 8 rally is scheduled for November 1 between 12 noon and 5:15 p.m. on the south lawn of City Hall.
The anti-Prop 8 rally will be November 2 beginning at 1 p.m. in the downtown park, says grassroots rally organizer Roots of Equality. According to their website, LGBT rights advocate Chastity Bono, the daughter of Cher and the late Sonny Bono, is slated to speak on behalf of the opposition.
If passed, Proposition 8 would amend California's constitution to define marriage as only between a man and a woman, and it was placed on the ballot after a May state Supreme Court ruling stating a ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional. The campaigns have since has become heated and well funded.
Yes on 8 supporters claim by early October $25.4 million was raised from religious groups, according to the Times, who add The Knights of Columbus donated $1 million.
The No on 8 campaign fundraising efforts increased when $15 million in donations fell short of Yes on 8, and they rallied to raise an additional $5 million. The California Teachers Association donated $1 million in October to defeat the proposition.
The pricey Proposition 8 is adding statewide interest in an already anticipated strong national voter turnout for November 4 election. John Duran, a West Hollywood City Council member and fundraiser for opponents of Prop 8, told USA Today, “This is the most expensive cultural war in America, ever.”
