Probation Officers Crack Down on Sex Offenders Ahead of Halloween Night

Los Angeles County probation officers conducted surprise searches of 66 of the “highest risk” child predators ahead of Halloween night Friday. Adrian Arambulo reports live for the NBC4 News at Noon on Friday, Oct. 31, 2014.

Five sex offenders were arrested ahead of Halloween night during a surprise early-morning probation check of Los Angeles County’s “highest risk” child predators.

More than 60 sex offenders weren’t given warnings about 5 a.m. probation checks in areas such as Pomona and Santa Clarita. The checks netted five arrests, as well confiscations of a dozen computers being checked for child pornography.

“Anytime you have egregious crimes against young children who literally have no chance to defend themselves, we have to be the ones to protect,” said Eric Newby of the LA County Probation Department.

During one search, a 22-year-old sex offender living with his mother was arrested after the search team learned that the mother runs an apparent child day care business out of the home, officials said. A female living in the home with her infant son and 9-year-old daughter was unaware the man is a registered sex offender.

A mother and sex offender were arrested after a 10-year-old girl was found in a house during a search. Another man was arrested on an unrelated probation violation. The girl was taken into protective custody.
