Homes Evacuated in Overnight Standoff at South LA Apartment

After firing rounds into an apartment, a man refused to come out of a residence for nearly six hours in South LA

A nearly six-hour standoff began with a report of shots fired at an apartment. Toni Guinyard reports for the NBC4 News at 11 a.m. on Monday Sept. 17, 2018.

A man who fired a shot into an apartment in the South Los Angeles area was barricaded inside that apartment overnight before surrendering early Monday.

The man opened fire in the apartment about 11 p.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of West 97th Street in the unincorporated Westmont area of Los Angeles County. A resident at the apartment complex said at least one round went through a screen on her door.

Surrounding homes and apartments were evacuated for the safety of residents during the hourslong standoff. Diversionary flash-bang grenades may have been deployed in an effort to get the man out of the apartment.

The 45-year-old man was taken into custody early Monday.

No injuries were reported.
