Dodgers Designate Mat Latos For Assignment

Dodgers' pitcher Mat Latos will not be on roster as LA looks to clinch the NL West Division after the team designated him for assignment on Thursday.

The July 31st trade deadline deal between the Miami Marlins and the Los Angeles Dodgers can officially be called a bust.

The Dodgers ended their short relationship with starting pitcher Mat Latos on Thursday when they designated the right-hander for assignment, reinstating Carlos Frias from the 60-day disabled list.

Latos has been horrific since joining the Dodgers at the trade deadline, posting an 0-3 record with a 6.66 ERA.

The nail in Latos' coffin occurred on Tuesday night during the marathon 16-inning game with the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium. After the Dodgers bullpen had shut down the Rockies, allowing only one run over nine innings of relief, Dodgers' manager Don Mattingly had no other options but to insert Latos into the game for the top of the 16th inning.

"It was either Latos or Wieland," Mattingly said after the game. "We literally ran out of players, we thought Latos was the better choice there."

He wasn't.

Latos surrendered the game-winning home run to Nolan Arenado on a high fastball, ending the game, and his time with the team.

With the playoffs fast approaching, the Dodgers will most likely go with a four-man rotation of Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Brett Anderson and Alex Wood. The Dodgers magic number to clinch the NL West division is 10 games with 17 remaining.
