Suspicious Item Found Under Truck at College of the Canyons

The parking lot at College of the Canyons that was being used for a high school graduation ceremony was shut down for hours because of a “fake device” that was found underneath a truck. Jane Yamamoto reports for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2017.

A suspicious item found Thursday under a pickup truck in a parking lot at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, near the campus stadium where a high school graduation was scheduled, was determined to be a fake device, authorities said.

The item was reported just after 5 p.m. at the college at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, according to a watch commander at the sheriff's Santa Clarita Valley Station.

The lot was closed and those attending the Canyon High School commencement were ushered to the far end of the stadium, away from the lot, according to a report from the scene that indicated the ceremony would proceed as planned.

A bomb squad was dispatched to the scene, according to Deputy Trina Schrader of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

Valencia Boulevard was shut down for the investigation and reopened by 9:30 p.m.
