The teen's mother told police the boy had a gun and threatened to shoot her

Police shot a 16-year-old in La Habra after his mother called and said he had a gun and had threatened to shoot her before fleeing and saying he “wanted to shoot something and be in the news.”

A 16-year-old boy allegedly armed with a handgun was injured in an officer-involved shooting in La Habra.

Police said they were called around 9:30 a.m. about a family disturbance in the 200 block of South Monte Vista Road. The caller, the teen's mother, told police the teen had a gun and threatened to shoot her before fleeing on foot, saying he "wanted to shoot something and be on the news," police said.

An officer spotted the teen at Guadalupe Park in the 300 block of South Walnut Street and tried to contact him, but a shooting occurred, leaving the teen wounded. It wasn't immediately clear what precipitated the shooting or if the teen fired at the officer, but the officer was not injured.

After being shot, the teen managed to run away, but he was found near Knudsen and Third Street and taken to UC Irvine Medical Center. A handgun was recovered nearby, police said.

He is expected to be booked on suspicion of attempted murder, criminal threats and brandishing a firearm, police said.
